“Se parece a mi familia.”

At one of our bilingual book fairs on Chicago's Southwest Side, a mother stopped at a picture book. She pointed at an illustration and, with tears in her eyes, whispered:

“Se parece a mi familia. Nunca había visto algo así.”
(This looks just like my family. I've never seen anything like this before.)

I understood her completely.
I never saw a family like mine in a book until I was 12 years old.
That is why we built ¡Viva! Los Libros.
And it is why I wrote this book.

Why This Book, Why Now?

In the fall of 2025, immigration raids swept through Chicago.
In Latine neighborhoods, streets that once hummed with life suddenly went quiet.
I supported rapid response efforts during those weeks.
What stayed with me most were the children.
Frightened. Tearful. Carrying a weight no child should ever carry.

SOMOS / WE ARE is my answer to that silence.

It is a bilingual board book for children ages 2–5.
It is a love letter and a poem written directly to Latine children.
Written in Spanish and English at the exact same time.
Neither language is an echo of the other. Both are originals.

Page after page, it tells our children what they most need to hear:
You are seen.
You are celebrated.
Both of your languages belong to you.
You are complete in all your glorious humanity.
