SANCTUARY takes us into a not-so-distant America—2032—where every citizen is microchipped and constantly tracked, from the bus stop to the grocery store. For undocumented families, survival feels impossible. Yet sixteen-year-old Vali and her loved ones have managed to build a joyful life in small-town Vermont. That fragile safety unravels when her mother’s counterfeit chip begins to fail and the Deportation Forces descend on their community. Forced to flee, Vali must confront both danger and possibility on the road to freedom.
Co-authors Paola Mendoza and Abby Sher weave a story that is both heart-pounding and hopeful, asking what it means to fight for dignity, solidarity, and sanctuary in a country defined by surveillance and exclusion.
Author, educator, and organizer Paola Mendoza is now bringing Sanctuary to classrooms and communities nationwide. Through interactive workshops, she invites community members to explore the novel’s urgent themes of immigration, resistance, creativity, and community care. Together, participants will transform their rage, fear, and uncertainty into art, dialogue, and collective action—tools we need to imagine and build a more just America today.
